Moms are often asked “what is something you couldn’t live without in those first few days.” My answer would be a simple one – my May Designs Newborn Journal! (no this isn’t a sponsored post … I just LOVE this thing!)
I had known about May Designs when they first came out with the Maybook, but then when I was pregnant with Bastian and saw that they had expanded into newborn journals I had to have one!
I loved it so much with S that I started gifting them to all of my pregnant friends and then getting another when Theo was born. The covers are fully customizable which gives it a nice personalized look. There are loads of cover designs, font styles, and colors to choose from when customizing your journal! There are 3 available sizes – thought not all of the pages come in all of the sizes. I get the Classic which is 5×8 so it fits nicely in a diaper bag!
It was only natural that the minute we found out we were having a girl, I went off and ordered a new Maybook! Then a week later this beauty joined the gang!
I love the bright colors and the not so girly girliness of it! You’re probably wondering what exactly the newborn journal is. Is it a baby book? Is it just a notebook? It’s a creature of it’s very own. It’s something no one else (that I’ve found) has made, at least not this perfectly!
This newborn journal allows you to record your baby’s birth stats and SO much more! (like how it says “first foot prints” – yeah mama failed on that with the boys, so I just add their first picture from the hospital instead.) It allows you to record your birth story, details of your hospital stay, and even has a place to record notes from your check ups. Which feel like a daily occurrence during those first few weeks.
Yet my absolute favorite feature is the ability to record your feedings, how long baby slept, and the wet/dirty diaper count. Any mama knows that how often your baby ate, which side (or bottle oz) and for how long, is a question you are asked MANY MANY times in the hospital, and again at all of those checkups. It’s good that they ask! However, that is a LOT of information for a mama to try to remember. I know they make bracelets for remembering which boob you nursed from last, but that doesn’t keep track of how often and for how long. They gave me a similar (not as pretty or practical) version in the hospital and it was, well…awful if you ask me. It was flimsy and didn’t have enough space to really record what you needed.
This on the other hand is PERFECT! It’s neatly laid out – all you need to do is fill it in! No effort whatsoever in the brain power category, which let’s be honest is pretty much fried when you just had a baby and are recovering, while getting the added pleasure of lack of sleep.
This page is something I think they improved upon compared to the last two I had. I just didn’t feel as though there were enough spaces for the diaper counts and would have to use the margins. Clearly they think like mamas and think about what a mama would need and made the much appreciated edit in design.
This is what the original looked like.
It was cute seeing the little diaper graphics, but my boys pooped and peed WAY too much for that! The new design is simple and perfect!
